| I was sitting half asleep in the pre-dawn light at 5:00 a.m. on the banks of the Skeena River talking to a friend when all of a sudden my rod that was upright in a pipe rod holder pounded into the rocks, started vibrating and whipping and the reel was singing as line peeled off. I grabbed the rod the yanked it back a few times to set the hook as the fish pulled line as it went downriver. I tightened the drag on my reel and prepared for the battle of landing a large chinook salmon on shore. I started reeling as the fish relaxed the pull and it started coming right to shore at me. As I caught up with the slack the large fish nosedived into a deep trough along the shoreline and stayed down for awhile. As the fished tired I reefed on the rod to bring it up to the surface. The fish finally came out of the water and thrashed its head trying to shake the hook. The 8 oz. weight from the 3-way setup went sailing away as the fish thrashed on top of the water. Finally after about a half hour the fish tired enough so my friend could net it near shore. |
